"Helping dogs feel safe and secure should always be our first goal"
We have the pleasure at My Hart Dog, of fostering 2 wonderful chocolate labradors for Black Retriever X Rescue as a last minute plea. It was unexpected and certainly not what had been planned for the Jubilee weekend! We were prepared for these dogs to arrive tired, frightened and unsure of what was happening to them. We know they had not had the best treatment by humans, so our priority was to help them feel safe and give space to rest and recover. As expected we have seen behaviours that are linked to feeling insecure, almost certainly driven by their previous experiences. Nutmeg and Teasel have been with us only 10 days, and have progressed from wide-eyed shutdown dogs to relaxing with us and enjoying a romp in the paddock with the My Hart Dog gang! It is worth noting that before we can consider any training with a new dog, we must address their emotional needs. Helping dogs feel safe and secure should always be our first goal.
